Local Anaesthesia Update and Upskill Workshop
Refining and Revising your Local Anaesthesia Techniques

It is well documented that dental patients keep coming back to practitioners that ‘don’t hurt’ and give ‘painless injections’. This area of clinical practice is the biggest source of anxiety for our patients – and can become stressful for operators if they are not confident and competent in their LA techniques and knowledge.

This 3-hour interactive workshop has been designed for participants to:

  • Review the neurobiology that underpins local anaesthesia
  • Revisit the key clinical landmarks to use in administering effective LA
  • Identify and discuss contemporary LA agents and techniques
  • Give hands on practice for optimising local anaesthetic administration
  • Reflect on application to their practice by analysing authentic clinical scenarios.

Atraumatic Extraction of Primary Teeth Using Periotomes, Luxators & Elevators Workshop
This training covers the issues of safety and the physics behind how a lever works before comparing the conventional and atraumatic techniques for extraction of primary teeth. It then describes and explains the use of Periotomes, Luxators and Elevators for extraction of primary teeth. The training then involves a practical demonstration, hands-on-training, practical assessment and theoretical assessment.

Learning objectives:

  • Determine the scope of practice of oral health and dental therapists in extraction of primary teeth
  • Identify anatomical features to be considered in extracting primary teeth
  • Review the mechanical principles of exodontia
  • Describe the criteria required for a safe and atraumatic extraction
  • Identify the armamentarium that oral health and dental therapists use for the extraction of primary teeth
  • Discuss the indications for using different instruments in the extraction technique of primary teeth through completion of a range of case studies
  • Demonstrate the correct use of the forceps, elevators, luxators and periotomes with hands-on experience on dental models/manikins
