One Dental and TruView creator and endodontist Steven Cohn

It was an invention of necessity for endodontist Steven Cohn when he first began to design prototypes for today's TruView film positioning device over 40 years ago.

The TruView PSP/Film or Digital Positioning Device produces images of high diagnostic quality, with a minimal number of exposures.

It is both easy to use and to teach to auxiliary staff and is sold via the One Dental platform.

One Dental is 100% Australian owned and provides quality products to students, dental educators, dental clinics and oral health professionals and assists patients accessing oral hygiene products.

Dr Cohn explains the origins of his invention:
“As an endodontist there is a process we have to measure the length of the tooth to clear it out and it's very difficult to take the image required. Long ago I originally designed a device I called the Snap-X to work in that particular situation.

TruView came about because the moulds stopped getting made for the Snap-X production, so I designed a new device which, due to the evolution of time, had changed from film to digital, so it was an update because the whole game had changed.”

When inconvenience breeds ingenuity

Dr Cohn never saw himself as an inventor but rather someone who designed a product ‘on the job’ to solve an inconvenient problem.

“It was inconvenient that there wasn’t something universal that could be used in this situation, but there were other devices that came so far to solve the issue so I took some ideas and improved and refined them so the TruView could become what it is.

It was developed while on the job as an endodontist because I looked at the problem and I looked at the devices out there that came so far as to try to solve it and they weren’t as fit-for-purpose because there wasn’t that input from practitioners so I brought the practitioner perspective.”

Fostering the education of future practitioners with One Dental

Dr Cohn said One Dental’s mission had “always been a bit different” in that they focused heavily on the education of future practitioners and their access to materials, a very unique value proposition.

“I met Joanne from One Dental a long time ago and we built that rapport professionally for a long time. Joanne offers a personalised service that larger conglomerates absolutely do not, and I think people in the industry truly appreciate this.

To build the education side of things has been a huge undertaking for One Dental and an amazing point of difference. I know the educational facilities that work with One Dental are extremely satisfied and I commend Joanne for her commitment to the education of future practitioners.”

One Dental personalised service and industry connections

Dr Cohn said One Dental’s commitment to personalised service set them apart from competitors now and into the future.

“I have been in this industry for decades and it was a very personal industry when I first came to Australia - all of the big companies started out as family-owned businesses but then expanded to lose their personalised services. One Dental has maintained its boutique offering and people appreciate having a relationship with a company and the people within it, which is something One Dental is able to offer above and beyond the competition.”

The future is in Artificial Intelligence

Where does a long-term endodontist see the dental industry heading?

Into the realm of robots and artificial intelligence, according to Dr Cohn.

“There are machines that can put a cap on your tooth now and things are getting more and more that way in most industries, including dentistry - automated. But there will always be a need for those products they’re placing to be made and to be sold and to be marketed and One Dental is positioned in that niche.”
